The food court design for the Sansusi music festival is located at the intersection of four important gathering spots: the dome, sauna, kohr rest area, and musician brawl site. This central position makes it easy for guests to access the food court, helping it blend into the festival atmosphere. The design is based on concepts of interpretation, transition, repetition, and variation, aligning with the musical themes present throughout the festival.

Architectural Arrangement

Three angular structures form the core of the food court, identical in shape but arranged in different orientations. This layout encourages interaction and allows for smooth movement around the space. The design culminates in a circular seating area that includes a fire pit at its center. This feature serves as a gathering point for visitors, promoting social interaction and quiet reflection.

Material Expression

The materials used in the food court structures are a key aspect of the design. Different skin materials cover the side faces of each structure. These include wood, metal, and polycarbonate, each contributing unique qualities and visual appeal. The choice of materials creates a conversation with the surrounding nature, enhancing the sensory experience for those who spend time in this area.

Light and Atmosphere

Translucent roof panels are employed to allow natural light to filter into the internal spaces. This design choice reveals the inner structure during the day while establishing a connection with the forest around it. The play of light and shadow adds a dynamic quality, changing the atmosphere throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky.

Nighttime Transformation

When darkness falls, the structures take on a new role. They become illuminated elements that draw festival-goers closer. The lighting incorporated into the design reinforces a sense of community, marking the food court clearly within the larger site. Each structure turns into a welcoming beacon, glowing softly to encourage visitors to engage and explore, enhancing the lively festival experience.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
