THE FLARE is a mass timber high-rise located in downtown Houston, Texas. It explores the connection between urban spaces and the natural environment. The design aims to create a balanced atmosphere for both work and social interaction. With its location close to the lively downtown and Tinsley Natural Park Reserve, the structure integrates the bustle of city life with the peacefulness of nature.

Design Concept

The concept focuses on merging urban life with natural elements. By considering the urban scale, the design enhances the transition between buildings and outdoor spaces. This integration addresses the needs of its users while creating an environment that is welcoming and functional.

Materials

The project highlights the use of Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) and Glue-Laminated Timber (GLT). These materials support the building's overall aesthetic while contributing to sustainability. The choice of timber helps to create a warm environment, promoting comfort for occupants and enhancing their experience within the space.

Public Spaces

The ground level features a plaza designed for community interaction. It is partially covered by a distinctive glulam canopy. This element functions as both protection and an architectural highlight. It defines the entrance and encourages gatherings, making the space more inviting for people to come together.

Facade and Interior Design

The building's facade showcases the beauty of timber through its detailed expression. The use of timber on the exterior draws attention to the structure and invites people inside. Inside, exposed timber elements in workspaces create a welcoming atmosphere that supports productivity while keeping the interior comfortable throughout its use.

The unique glulam canopy serves not only as a shelter but also as a defining feature that frames the entrance, enhancing the visual and functional qualities of the building.
