The Stone Barn Meditation Camp is positioned in the peaceful rural area of Vidzeme, close to Veckalsnava. It serves as a space for meditation and community gathering, designed to blend the built environment with the landscape. The concept focuses on creating a connection between people and nature, enhancing the experience of reflection and social interaction.

Site Organization

The camp features a well-planned pathway that leads visitors through the scenic surroundings, following the Berzaune River and gardens. This route guides newcomers and helps them feel part of the natural setting. The layout includes various structures that promote both solitary contemplation and collective engagement, inviting guests to immerse themselves in the serene atmosphere.

Architectural Composition

A prominent element is the high black corridor that connects an updated stone sawmill with newly constructed spaces. This corridor presents a contrast between intimate, darker areas and a spacious guest room filled with light. Large windows create views of the forest, breaking down barriers and ensuring that nature is an integral part of the interior experience.

Meditation and Communal Spaces

The building designated for meditation showcases a modern design, marked by sharp forms that fit well with the landscape. It's oriented towards the river, with generous windows capturing picturesque views and allowing natural light to fill the space. Within the design are various communal areas, including an outdoor space for meditation that is surrounded by trees, offering both privacy and an open connection to the sky.

Materiality

Materials are selected with care, emphasizing sustainability and visual harmony. The existing sawmill is constructed from brick and stone, grounding it in its historical context. In contrast, the new structures are supported by steel frames, allowing for a contemporary feel. Additionally, the use of titanium-zinc composite panels adds a modern touch, ensuring durability while blending well with the natural environment.

Light plays a significant role within the spaces. The changing patterns of sunlight and shadow enhance the feeling of connection to the outdoors. Visitors can appreciate the natural surroundings throughout the day, enriching their experience at the camp.
