The Painters' Lake House is in Latvia and serves as a living area and creative space for two families of painters. The design represents a modern take on traditional Latvian architecture, focusing on a mix of home and studio life. The goal is to create a sense of community, encouraging interaction while maintaining each family's independence. The relationship with nature is key, promoting sustainability and an inspiring environment.

Spatial Organization

The layout centers around a closed courtyard located between the residence and a warehouse. This design supports social connections among the inhabitants while providing private spaces. The open atrium brings in natural light, connecting the indoors with the outside landscape. On the ground floor, workshops, kitchens, and living areas allow for shared activities and gatherings. The upper floor, with private bedrooms, offers a quiet retreat where families can enjoy views of the lake.

Roof Design

A significant aspect of the house is its inward sloping roof. This design serves functional purposes as well as aesthetic ones. It helps with rain and snow runoff, making the structure resilient to weather conditions. The height of the roof enhances views from both the living and studio areas, filling the spaces with light and visibility.

Materials and Sustainability

Local materials are a priority, highlighting a commitment to sustainability. Wood and thatch are the main elements of construction, reflecting traditional methods that resonate with the local culture. A grass-covered roof adds insulation and benefits the local ecosystem by providing a habitat for wildlife. This choice reinforces environmental responsibility and offers better climate adaptability.

Functional Flexibility

Flexibility is a key characteristic of the design. Movable partitions throughout allow for changing needs, letting residents adjust their spaces as required. This adaptability supports a range of activities, from collaborative projects to quiet moments of reflection.

The open atrium, featuring large windows, invites light and air into the home. This abundance of natural elements fosters an environment where creativity can flourish, creating a welcoming atmosphere for both work and relaxation.
