Wulcano is a modular design situated in the stunning landscapes of Iceland. Using 40-foot shipping containers, the pavilion aims to blend with its natural environment while serving as a space for community activities. The project is based on three main ideas: the respect for the sacredness of the location, a clear design intention, and an understanding of the space's functional needs. By focusing on sustainability, Wulcano emphasizes practicality through methods of pre-assembly and the ability to disassemble and transport the structure as needed.

Materials

Inside Wulcano, Oriented Strand Board (OSB) wood panels create a warm and welcoming atmosphere while ensuring strength and durability. Recycled wood planks from old tracts enhance the aesthetic and align with the project's sustainable goals. These material choices lead to a simple yet inviting environment, making the pavilion a comfortable place for its users.

Spatial Organization

The layout includes distinct areas for various functions. A hall serves as a reception space, while a multifunctional gathering area allows for multiple activities. Additionally, there is a service area and a small movie theatre, providing versatility in use. This organization supports different types of gatherings and encourages interaction among visitors, making the pavilion more than just a building—it becomes a hub for community engagement.

Indoor-Outdoor Relationship

Wulcano pays special attention to the connection between its indoor spaces and the outdoors. Large windows are thoughtfully positioned to provide views of the surrounding Icelandic landscape. This design encourages a natural flow of light and air, enhancing the experience for those inside. Visual telescopes on the first level give occupants a chance to engage more deeply with their surroundings, highlighting the landscape and making nature an integral part of the experience.

Design Detail

The careful combination of scale and choice of materials creates an architectural expression that respects its ecological setting. The interplay of natural light with the straightforward design of the container modules forms an engaging environment. Walking through Wulcano, one can sense the connection between the structure and the landscape, inviting occupants to appreciate both the built and natural worlds.
