5 key facts about this project
The Al Wathba Wetland Reserve Flamingo Observation Tower is located in Abu Dhabi, designed to enhance how visitors connect with the natural environment. It serves to provide a space for observing the diverse wildlife inhabiting the wetlands. Rather than simply being a point to reach, the design highlights the journey that begins upon arrival at the reserve and culminates with an ascent to the top of the tower, offering broad views of the surroundings.
Structural Design
The tower is supported by reinforced concrete pad foundations that ensure an even distribution of weight across the wetland subsurface. This foundational system enhances the stability of the structure, making it resilient to the challenges typical in wetland areas.
Rising above these foundations are glu-laminated timber columns, standing at a height of 8.46 meters. These wooden columns create the main framework of the tower. Their exposure in the design not only adds strength but also allows them to visually connect with the landscape. The architectural expression is enhanced through this openness, creating a link between the built environment and the natural setting.
User Experience
Visitors ascend the tower via a spiraling ramp that offers changing perspectives as they climb. This design encourages exploration and engagement as each step reveals a different view of the wetland. The experience becomes more than just a climb; it allows visitors to immerse themselves in the landscape around them.
At the top of the tower, visitors are rewarded with wide-reaching views, providing many opportunities for wildlife observation. The design emphasizes both reflection and active engagement with the environment, allowing people to appreciate the thriving ecosystem from a unique vantage point.
Structural elements are integrated throughout to maintain a sense of transparency and openness. This design choice highlights the natural beauty surrounding the tower. The use of exposed materials brings attention to the connection between the structure and the environment, making the experience of visiting the observation tower both rich and meaningful.
