The Stone Barn Meditation Camp is set in Latvia's rich natural landscape, designed to promote meditation and personal reflection. The concept centers around creating a space that connects people with nature. Inspired by local culture, the design incorporates elements from traditional Latvian symbols and basket weaving. The goal is to combine areas for community interaction with spaces that allow for quiet contemplation.

Structure and Materiality

The camp features an openwork structure mainly made from pinewood, which is readily available in local forests. This choice supports sustainability and strengthens the connection to the environment. The main hall has a high ceiling and large windows, letting in plenty of natural light while maintaining a relationship with the outdoors. This openness invites nature into the building and makes the space feel larger.

Integration of Natural Elements

Below the main hall, a covered terrace extends usable space, encouraging outdoor activities that deepen the connection to the surrounding landscape. Next to the terrace is the silence chamber, built for quiet reflection. The dark corridor leading to this chamber creates a sense of calm, inviting visitors to focus inward and reflect without visual distractions.

Sustainable Living Features

Across the site, a family house complements the overall design. It is surrounded by a similar structural framework and includes a vegetable garden that is accessible directly from the kitchen. This arrangement encourages residents to engage in sustainable living. Additionally, a rainwater harvesting system captures runoff from the roof and directs it into storage tanks, promoting responsible use of water resources.

Design Detailing

Attention to detail is evident throughout the camp. The entire structure is surrounded by a terrace that connects indoor spaces with outdoor areas. This terrace not only enhances accessibility but also provides a view of the creek that flows beneath the building, enriching the user experience. Each element in the design contributes to a welcoming atmosphere that blends architecture with nature.
