5 key facts about this project
01
Thick rusty steel plates reference local military history and offer a unique aesthetic.
02
Modular design allows for quick assembly and adaptability in various settings.
03
Each unit incorporates environmental strategies like photovoltaic panels and rainwater collection.
04
Compact living areas are efficiently organized to include essential functions within 16 m².
05
C-shaped configuration fosters community interaction among residents.

C4 HOUSE is a modular housing solution designed to effectively respond to the housing needs of Ukrainians in the context of ongoing conflict. By using modern methods of global aid, the design emphasizes efficiency and adaptability. The overall concept integrates prefabrication to create functional living spaces that also carry a deeper symbolic meaning of resilience and hope in challenging conditions.

MODULAR DESIGN

The housing solution consists of four independent modules. Each module is created for easy prefabrication, transport, and assembly. This approach enables quick setup in areas where housing is urgently needed. With a living area of about 16 m², each module includes key features like a kitchen, bathroom, three bedrooms, and a work and storage area. The careful arrangement of these functions makes the best use of limited space while providing necessary amenities for the residents.

MATERIALITY AND SYMBOLISM

A significant aspect of the design is the use of thick rusty steel plates. These materials are linked to local history, referencing destroyed military equipment. Instead of purely being components, they become symbols of transformation, turning reminders of conflict into elements of healing. This choice of material gives the housing a distinct appearance and reinforces its connection to the community's experiences.

SUSTAINABILITY FEATURES

The design reflects a commitment to sustainability by incorporating various environmental technologies. Each module includes photovoltaic panels, rainwater tanks, grey water systems, and water filtration devices. This setup supports self-sufficiency and minimizes environmental impact, ensuring that the living spaces are not just functional but also considerate of the surrounding ecosystem.

The "C"-shaped layout of the modules encourages interaction among residents, promoting a sense of community in a difficult environment. The architecture addresses the socio-political realities faced by displaced individuals, using design to create spaces that offer both shelter and a sense of belonging.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
