Revolving Walls Create Flexible Spaces in a Community-Focused Residential Environment

Project in-detail

With walls that revolve to adapt natural light and views, the design fosters a shared community environment while providing private living spaces in a high-density urban setting.
5 key facts about this project
01
Innovative revolving walls allow residents to adjust natural light and views.
02
An inner court centralizes community interaction while providing privacy.
03
The design integrates diverse functional spaces within a compact footprint.
04
Residents can control their surroundings based on seasonal changes.
05
The layout enhances connectivity in a densely populated urban area.

The design addresses the challenges faced in high-density urban living in Bangbae, a multi-family residential area in Seoul. Aiming to improve the quality of life, the goal is to create a living environment that reduces issues like lack of sunlight, noise, and privacy concerns. The design focuses on balancing personal spaces with communal areas, promoting both connection and comfort.

Inner Court Features

Central to the design is the inner court, which serves as a source of natural light and a space for residents to gather. This area is carefully placed to capture sunlight and provide views of nature. By facilitating interaction, the inner court encourages community among residents while still respecting the need for individual privacy.

Spatial Arrangement

The layout includes various essential spaces such as work areas, a master bedroom, kitchen and dining zones, a cinema, a meditation room, a study, a children's bedroom, a living room, and a cellar. Each area is designed to serve specific functions while ensuring that residents can enjoy both shared and private moments. This thoughtful arrangement acknowledges the desire for personal space within the urban landscape.

Dynamic Wall Mechanism

A notable feature of the design is the walls surrounding the inner court that can be revolved. This mechanism allows residents to change how much natural light enters their living areas and shifts the line between indoor and outdoor spaces. By giving residents control over their environment, this feature helps to create a living experience that resonates with the changing times of day and seasons.

The blend of these design elements results in a living environment that welcomes light while clearly defining both individual and communal spaces. It enhances the overall experience of living in a dense urban setting, allowing residents to feel connected to the outside world while enjoying the comforts of home.
