Dynamic LED panels and solid bronze frames redefine Tokyo's narrow Roji alleys, creating immersive meditation spaces that foster reflection amidst urban density.
5 key facts about this project
01
Dynamic LED panels respond to user movement, altering color temperature to prompt self-reflection.
02
Solid bronze frames create both structural support and aesthetic continuity throughout the space.
03
The design integrates cast ceramic flooring, enhancing durability while maintaining a cohesive look.
04
Meditation spaces are specifically situated within Tokyo's historic Roji alleyways, promoting tranquility in urban density.
05
The project emphasizes a modular approach, allowing for flexibility in user experience and spatial configuration.

The project is set in the dense urban landscape of Tokyo, particularly within its less-trafficked alleyways known as Roji. These narrow lanes, once part of traditional low-rise neighborhoods, now provide a distinct setting for meditation spaces that enable both public and private experiences. The design aims to utilize the unique qualities of Roji, offering a quiet retreat from the city’s fast pace while encouraging users to engage in self-reflection.

Design Concept

The main idea focuses on integrating meditation spaces into the existing urban environment, enhancing how users experience their surroundings. LED panels are strategically placed to create temporary partitions that redefine the boundaries of the alleyway. As individuals walk through this area, the panels respond to their speed of movement by changing color temperature. This feature encourages users to consider their pace and current state of mind, prompting moments of introspection.

Materiality and Configuration

The choice of materials is crucial to the project’s realization. LED emitting glass panels are used to create a connection between light and space, enhancing the atmosphere as users navigate through the meditation area. These panels are supported by solid bronze frames, providing both structural strength and an appealing visual quality. Durable technopolymer frames ensure that the installation will endure wear over time. Solid bronze brackets, integral to the construction, bring together the overall aesthetic while offering necessary support.

Spatial Experience

The design establishes an experience that balances Tokyo’s busy atmosphere with spaces meant for quiet contemplation. Technology is woven into the fabric of the design, allowing for gentle adjustments in light as people move through. By enhancing the secluded feel of the Roji alleys, the project changes these overlooked passages into spaces for reflection, creating a place where urban life can coexist with moments of stillness.

Cast ceramic tiles cover the modular flooring, contributing to a cohesive and welcoming environment. Each design element works together to evoke calmness, highlighting the change from a typical urban alleyway to a carefully considered meditation space. The results invite users to pause and reflect in an otherwise busy city.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
