Reconnect is an urban housing initiative located in Gangxia Village, Shenzhen, designed to accommodate 25 migrant families moving from rural areas. The aim is to tackle the issues often found in urban villages, especially overcrowding and a loss of community. The design concept focuses on promoting connections among residents and creating shared spaces that encourage social interaction. By fostering a sense of belonging, the project offers not just housing, but a supportive environment for families during their transition to urban life.

Community Engagement

The design features open communal areas that encourage interaction between families. Instead of isolating residents in individual units, it maximizes shared spaces for cooking, socializing, and daily activities. This arrangement nurtures friendships among neighbors and creates a supportive atmosphere. By integrating social spaces into the layout, the design reflects the importance of community in everyday life.

Materials and Structure

The project uses 30 shipping containers placed within a simple steel framework. This choice of materials meets urban density requirements while offering adaptability and efficiency. The containers are designed with load-bearing capabilities, which reduce the need for extensive renovations. They also provide insulation, ensuring comfortable living conditions. Large openings such as doors and circular windows allow in natural light and ventilation, which are vital for health and well-being in densely populated areas.

Context in Urban Environment

Located in a vibrant city, the project responds to the unique characteristics of Shenzhen's urban landscape. It addresses the pressing needs of migrant families, which makes it particularly relevant in today’s fast-growing urban areas. The design not only offers housing but also integrates elements that maintain connections to family, culture, and community. This thoughtful approach combines traditional lifestyles with modern urban living.

Light and Space Design

The design intentionally incorporates natural light through strategically placed openings and communal areas. This focus on light enhances the atmosphere of the living spaces and contributes positively to residents' well-being. The warmth of wooden accents inside the containers contrasts with the industrial elements, creating a welcoming environment. Families will find comfort in these shared spaces, which encourage their adaptation to a new urban lifestyle while preserving a sense of community.
