Microtropolis aims to address the critical need for affordable housing in Sydney's Inner West LGA, an area marked by significant changes due to gentrification. Located in White Bay, the development utilizes a large brownfield site to promote urban density while avoiding the challenges associated with high-rise buildings. The design emphasizes the integration of affordable housing into a mixed-use setting, fostering community engagement and accessibility for a variety of residents.

Design Concept

The central idea of Microtropolis focuses on establishing a flexible building platform that accommodates a substantial amount of affordable housing. This aligns with the Affordable Housing Policy of the Sydney Inner West LGA, which mandates that at least 30% of housing in government-owned developments be affordable. By combining affordable units with other community functions, the project seeks to enhance social equity and provide accessible living options for various income groups.

Community Interaction

The project's design encourages communal living and promotes interaction among residents. By blending apartment complexes with public spaces, the focus is on fostering social connections and a sense of belonging. This design is particularly important in attracting a diverse range of residents, including healthcare workers, emergency personnel, single-parent families, and students, ensuring an inclusive atmosphere that supports community ties.

Sustainability and Adaptability

Sustainability is a key consideration in Microtropolis, especially regarding local ship-breaking practices. The proposal suggests that these activities take place under Australian regulations within Sydney Harbour, creating safe job opportunities while enhancing material recycling for the affordable housing market. The simple assembly methods used in construction allow for quick development and flexibility, enabling spaces to adapt as the needs of residents change over time.

Architectural Language

The design language of Microtropolis integrates residential areas with communal and public spaces. Continuous activity is encouraged, making the environment vibrant and dynamic. This connection not only improves the visual appeal but ensures the living spaces are actively engaged with their surroundings. Such arrangements promote both privacy and interaction, allowing residents to enjoy their personal spaces while connecting meaningfully with others in the community.

The careful layout of Microtropolis supports a lifestyle that balances individual needs with social engagement, making it a relevant solution in the current urban landscape.
