The Whispering Copper Memorial is located in Santiago, Chile, a city that holds a wealth of natural resources such as copper, water, and land. The project focuses on the importance of fairly distributing these resources, addressing the social inequalities stemming from their privatization. The design aims to serve as a reminder of the essential need for social justice in the management of these vital resources.

Structure and Space

The memorial features a circular structure that is intersected by an axis, which varies in height. This variation affects how visitors perceive the inner void. The void is designed to encourage introspection and exploration. It contrasts with themes of exclusion and accessibility related to how resources are distributed. As people move through this space, they have a series of visual and physical interactions with their surroundings.

Materiality and Light

Copper, significant to Chile's resource identity, is a primary material in the memorial's construction. Using copper not only highlights the importance of this metal to the area but also contributes to the structure's aesthetic. The design incorporates transparent elements that house light boxes. These boxes illuminate the inner void and display images depicting various social injustices. The interplay of light and material creates a meaningful connection between the physical structure and its underlying message.

Reflective Elements

Alongside the light and copper features, a water mirror is included in the design. This element enhances the reflective quality of the space. As visitors move, the water creates dynamic visual reflections, further emphasizing ideas of transparency and contemplation. The interaction between light, water, and structure creates an engaging environment that invites visitors to reflect on the themes presented.

The Whispering Copper Memorial showcases a thoughtful architectural expression that invites viewers to consider the relationship between natural resources and social equity. As people navigate the space, they encounter its many layers, prompting deeper exploration and personal reflection.
