Rammed Earth Form with Curvilinear Geometry Supporting Community Engagement

Project in-detail

A curvilinear pavilion constructed from rammed earth and designed for optimal acoustics serves as a multifunctional space for community performances and gatherings, seamlessly integrating with the coastal landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
Rammed earth construction enhances thermal mass and energy efficiency.
02
Curvilinear geometry optimizes acoustics for public performances.
03
Large openings promote natural ventilation and indoor-outdoor connectivity.
04
Gabion sea walls stabilize the site while integrating with the coastal landscape.
05
Hemp tarps provide sheltered gathering areas, reflecting traditional methods.
The Rammed Earth Pavilion is a contemporary architectural project designed to function as a multifunctional space in a coastal setting. Its purpose is to accommodate public performances, exhibitions, and community gatherings, facilitating a connection between culture and nature. The architectural approach places strong emphasis on sustainability and the use of materials derived from the local environment, ensuring the structure harmonizes with its surroundings.

A defining feature of the pavilion is its construction primarily utilizing rammed earth, which is composed of a mixture of local soil, gravel, and clay. This choice not only provides robust structural integrity but also integrates the building into the landscape visually and environmentally. The walls of rammed earth reflect the natural earth tones of the region, enhancing the pavilion's contextual relevance.

Curvilinear architecture is another hallmark of the pavilion’s design. The sweeping forms mimic natural coastal elements, such as waves and rock formations, reinforcing the connection to the environment. This organic geometry contributes to the structure's aesthetic appeal, while also aiding in functionality by offering optimal acoustics for performances. The seating arrangement in a bowl-like configuration surrounds the central stage, enhancing the audience's engagement with the performance space.

The pavilion utilizes large openings to create a flow of natural light and air, promoting an indoor-outdoor experience. This design decision significantly reduces the need for artificial lighting and climate control, aligning with sustainable practices. Additionally, the integration of a network of slender canopies above the performance area not only offers protection from the weather but also allows sunlight to filter into the space, further enhancing its environmental connection.

Innovative aspects of the Rammed Earth Pavilion also include the use of gabion sea walls, which are strategically placed to stabilize the site against coastal erosion while enhancing visual appeal. The incorporation of hemp tarps for shaded areas reflects traditional building techniques, connecting contemporary design with cultural heritage.

The material palette is intentionally composed, with wood being used for flooring and seating, contributing warmth to the interiors and inviting tactile experiences. This careful selection of materials supports both functionality and environmental responsiveness, making the architecture of the pavilion a model for future public spaces.

For further exploration of its architectural plans and sections, as well as additional design insights, a comprehensive presentation detailing the Rammed Earth Pavilion is available. Engaging with these materials will provide a deeper understanding of the architectural methodologies and design philosophies employed in this project.
