Rainwater Management and Soil Elements in an Artist Residence by the Lake

Project in-detail

Incorporating effective rainwater management and strategically placed soil elements, the residence offers artists a unique environment that harmonizes creativity with the natural landscape surrounding Cernostaes Lake.
5 key facts about this project
01
Natural ventilation is enhanced through strategically located openings for effective airflow.
02
Workshops are positioned at the lowest elevation to create focused work environments.
03
Rainwater is managed through a system designed to direct water flow and reduce flooding risks.
04
Large glass panels provide expansive views of Cernostaes Lake, linking interior spaces with nature.
05
Soil drainage layers are integrated into the landscape for effective water management.

The Painter's Lake House, called The Cave, is located on the calm shores of Cernostaes Lake in Latvia. Designed to serve artists, the house emphasizes a strong connection with the natural environment. It encourages creativity by blending the built space with the landscape. The design fosters both collaboration and personal reflection, making it suitable for various artistic endeavors.

Spatial Arrangement

The layout features three distinctive levels, placing workshops at the lowest elevation. This arrangement creates private, focused areas for artists to work while maintaining easy access to communal spaces. The flow between these areas promotes interaction among residents, allowing for both socializing and solitary work.

Light and Views

Natural light is essential in the design. Strategic openings and skylights allow sunlight to flood the interior spaces. This abundant daylight creates a pleasant atmosphere for creativity. Large glass panels also offer sweeping views of the lake, linking indoor and outdoor environments harmoniously.

Environmental Considerations

Sustainability plays a key role in the design. A rainwater management system is incorporated into the landscape to direct water flow and reduce flooding risks. The project promotes natural ventilation with well-placed openings, enhancing indoor air quality and comfort throughout the year.

Materials and Design Aesthetic

Materials used in constructing The Cave reflect a focus on durability and compatibility with nature. Soil nets, a soil drainage layer, and filter fabric enhance water management. Concrete structures provide stability, while wood flooring and ceilings create warmth, echoing the surrounding landscape.

The careful manipulation of the landscape stands out as a significant design detail. This thoughtful approach enhances the experience of the residence and supports artistic exploration, creating an inviting environment for its residents.
