Natural Ventilation and Flexible Studio Spaces in a Community-Focused Setting

Project in-detail

Integrating natural ventilation and a flexible studio layout, the design fosters creative collaboration among painters while harmonizing with the lakeside landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
Flexible studio spaces can be subdivided for private use while maintaining lake views.
02
The layout incorporates natural ventilation strategies to enhance indoor air quality.
03
Courtyards are strategically positioned to provide communal areas and protect against wind.
04
Construction features a precise East/West orientation to maximize sunlight throughout the day.
05
Existing site foundations are reused to minimize environmental impact and preserve history.

The setting is a scenic landscape in Latvia, offering beautiful views of CERNOSTES LAKE. Designed for painters, the space encourages creativity while maintaining a focus on comfort and sustainability. The concept incorporates a strong connection to the surrounding environment, bringing in natural light and outdoor views that enhance both living and working areas. By thoughtfully organizing the layout, the building fosters community among its residents while allowing for personal artistic pursuits.

Design Layout

The layout follows an East/West axis, aligning with existing site features to maximize sunlight throughout the day. Blocks extend out from this central axis, creating a variety of spaces that provide different views and sunlight exposure. Courtyards between the blocks serve as communal areas, with the southern courtyard protected from wind and receiving ample sunshine. In contrast, the northern courtyard emphasizes the picturesque views of the lake. This arrangement encourages social interaction while still allowing for privacy.

Sustainability Initiatives

Sustainability plays a key role in the design approach, focusing on energy efficiency and the responsible use of resources. The building harnesses natural heating and cooling from the local climate to maintain comfortable temperatures year-round. Each space is fitted with operable windows that promote ventilation, while strategically placed openings let sunlight brighten the interiors. The project aims for low energy consumption by using effective insulation in walls, roofs, and floors, along with triple-glazed windows that improve thermal performance.

Artist Studio Design

The design of the artist's studio emphasizes flexibility and functionality. It features concertina walls that can create private areas with lake views and access to an outdoor terrace. A communal table in the studio is intended for collaboration among residents, acknowledging the importance of community in the creative process. Additional facilities, including a toilet, sink, and storage for materials, further enhance usability for the painters who will live and work in this space.

Architectural Connection to Context

The design draws inspiration from traditional architecture found in the region, reinterpreting these influences in a modern context. Each interior space is oriented to take advantage of the lake views, fostering a strong relationship with nature. This approach creates meaningful experiences for both individuals and the community as a whole. By integrating the building into its beautiful setting, the design promotes artistic exploration and inspiration, encouraging residents to engage deeply with their surroundings.
