The Other Side is a residential design located in Abisko, northern Sweden. This area is known for its extended daylight hours and clean air quality, which enhances the living environment for its residents. The house focuses on the relationship between natural light and space, aiming to create a home that is both functional and connected to its surroundings.

Living Area

The design divides the house into two main zones: the living area and the sleeping area. The living area includes the kitchen, dining room, study, and living room. Each of these spaces is arranged to make the most of available natural light. By ensuring that the areas where residents spend time are well-lit, the design fosters an inviting and comfortable atmosphere for daily activities.

Sleeping Area

The sleeping area contains the bedroom, which is planned to require less light due to its usage at night. This division into light and dark zones goes beyond practical purposes; it serves as a metaphor for balance, echoing the concepts of "yin" and "yang." The contrasting areas help to create a dynamic and varied living experience, reflecting the rhythm of day and night.

Light Dynamics

Openings throughout the house are positioned strategically. They allow sunlight and moonlight to enter and fill the space. Each opening is carefully angled to ensure that the living areas receive direct sunlight, while the sleeping zones benefit from softer, indirect light. This thoughtful arrangement of light supports a changing environment, adapting with the natural course of the day.

Material Selection

Materials play a significant role in the overall design. Lightweight concrete serves as the primary structure, finished in either white or black plaster, depending on the part of the house. Inside, wooden laminate flooring is used, keeping with a straightforward and clean look. Transparent glass is utilized for doors and windows, providing thermal comfort and establishing a visual link to the outdoor scenery. Monochrome black or white laminate covers the interiors and select furnishings, contributing to a cohesive appearance throughout the residence.

As people move through the spaces, they experience a fluid connection between light and material. This interaction forms an environment that resonates with the natural beauty of northern Sweden, allowing the essence of the landscape to integrate into everyday life.
