The Painters' Lake House is located on the peaceful shores of Cernostes Lake in Latvia. Designed to serve multiple residents and artists, it blends traditional space with modern needs. The overall concept focuses on creating a connection with the surrounding nature while fostering creativity and collaboration among those who live and work there.

Open Spatial Organization

The layout encourages an open and adaptable space, especially in the studio area. This design promotes collaboration, allowing artists to work together easily. Modular partition screens made from washable textiles are used to define spaces without closing off the view. These screens can be adjusted based on the residents' preferences, providing both flexibility for activities and privacy when needed.

Connection to Nature

Natural light and views are integral to the design. The building's main entrance and patio face south, maximizing sunlight throughout the day. Large windows bring the outdoors inside, making the landscape an essential part of daily life. This design encourages a fluid movement between interior and exterior, enhancing the living experience by connecting occupants to the beauty of the lake and its surroundings.

Sustainability and Materiality

Sustainability is a core focus, limiting disruption to the existing site. The design follows the layout of past buildings to minimize environmental impact. Cross-laminated timber serves as the main construction material, offering stability and contributing to carbon sequestration. The warm, inviting interior created by the exposed CLT further strengthens the bond between the occupants and nature, making the space feel comfortable and welcoming.

Artistic Living

The layout includes shared areas like the kitchen and dining room, which foster community among residents. At the same time, private living quarters on the upper level provide opportunities for quiet work or relaxation. A 360-degree deck extends from the main structure, allowing for easy access to outdoors and offering beautiful views of the lake. This design encourages interaction with nature and promotes a sense of community among those who call it home.

The careful design choices enhance daily life while maintaining a strong connection to the natural environment. Each element works together to create a setting where creativity can flourish amid the tranquil beauty of Cernostes Lake.
