The Roving House is a living space designed to meet the changing needs of couples in a compact urban environment. A focus on flexibility allows areas to merge or separate, catering to different activities and enhancing daily life. Both privacy and togetherness are prioritized, recognizing the importance of these elements in modern relationships.

Design Concept

The layout of the Roving House takes into account how couples spend their time. By creating dedicated zones for work, relaxation, dining, and sleeping, the design fosters a balance between personal pursuits and shared moments. This thoughtful arrangement encourages interaction while also providing necessary space for individual activities, making it suitable for various lifestyles.

Spatial Arrangement

Weekdays and weekends reveal different patterns of use in the Roving House. During the week, workspaces and bedrooms are emphasized, supporting productivity and rest. The living room becomes a space for leisure. On weekends, the design allows for flexible configurations, adapting to a greater need for relaxation and togetherness. Such adaptability enhances the overall living experience.

Materiality

The commitment to sustainability shines through in the materials chosen for the Roving House. Plywood forms a key structural component, combining strength with a lightweight nature. The black metallic kitchen cabinets offer a modern look while serving practical storage needs. Insulated ceramic floors improve energy efficiency, and wooden beams provide warmth and support, ensuring durability.

Functional Features

Essential features of the Roving House highlight a focus on effective use of space. A central service area connects the four main interactive zones, ensuring easy movement between them. This layout enhances the flow of daily activities and promotes energy efficiency. The design allows for temperature control, where closed spaces hold warmth during colder months, while open areas invite light and air, enhancing the living experience.

Large windows encourage natural light to enter, highlighting the warmth of wooden elements. The design creates an inviting atmosphere, promoting comfort and practicality in everyday living.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
