ENTANGLE presents an innovative approach to affordable housing in the busy urban environment of Hong Kong. The design focuses on creating a community-oriented living experience. It integrates modular residential units that can adapt to the diverse conditions found in urban settings. Central to the idea is the inclusion of shared spaces that promote social interaction among residents, redefining how people can live together in a city.

Modular Design

The design employs a modular architecture that includes both 3-module and 4-module configurations for living and communal areas. This modularity allows for flexibility in how individual units are arranged. Each module can be tailored to fit specific site conditions, which is important in a densely populated area. The use of modular construction methods also helps to streamline the building process, making it more efficient and cost-effective.

Shared Spaces

Shared spaces are the heartbeat of the design. These areas are intentionally created to encourage interactions among residents. Open-air communal spaces provide opportunities for socializing, making it easier for people to connect with one another. This focus on community ties aims to improve the living experience and foster a sense of belonging among tenants.

Ground-Level Integration

At the base of the structure is a podium that serves as an open area connecting the building to the street. This podium preserves existing local businesses and integrates them into the community. It helps create a lively atmosphere while promoting economic sustainability. The trellis at the entrance not only offers a welcoming entry but also enhances safety and visibility, creating a sense of security as people move into the residential areas.

Vertical Interaction

The design features a unique atrium. Here, a vertical string or hammock playground encourages engagement among residents spread across different floors. This area is not just functional; it transforms a typical atrium into a vibrant social space. By adding vertical elements, the design promotes connections between households, enhancing community life.

Each living unit is oriented to maximize natural light and ventilation. This attention to environmental factors improves the comfort of residents while establishing a relationship with the urban landscape. The exterior is wrapped in a ribbed metal panel rainscreen. This facade plays with light and provides visual interest, echoing the dynamic surroundings of the city. Overall, the thoughtful integration of communal areas and individual living spaces creates a supportive and lively environment for residents.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
