The project focuses on restoring and transforming a historic stone barn built in 1875. Previously used as a sawmill until the late 1990s, it is located in rural Vidzeme, an area noted for its cultural heritage and natural landscape. The aim is to revitalize the barn while incorporating modern architectural elements. The design concept emphasizes adaptive reuse, enhancing the connection to the surrounding environment and creating a multifunctional space for visitors.

Exterior Character

The building features a notable two-tone façade that combines natural stone with dark zinc cladding. This mix highlights the barn's historical context while introducing a modern look. The dark zinc cladding runs continuously from the roof to the upper walls, creating a cohesive appearance between the old structure and the new design.

Interior Spaces

The interior layout is designed around functional areas that encourage interaction and relaxation. A triple-height dining space is imagined as a greenhouse, promoting openness and transparency. The yoga room on the upper level offers a double-height space with wide views, which invites participation in mindful practices. A silent chamber located in the attic provides a dedicated area for quiet reflection, aligning with the emphasis on wellness.

Outdoor Integration

Connection to nature is further highlighted through a sunken meditation zone. This area serves as a tranquil retreat for visitors looking to unwind. Outdoor features include educational farming spaces that allow guests to engage in sustainable practices. The nature spa and sauna are designed to offer both indoor and outdoor experiences, emphasizing relaxation and rejuvenation.

Material Selection

Materials include natural stone and dark zinc cladding. These choices reflect the barn's history while supporting modern design principles. The selection of materials underscores a commitment to sustainability and respect for the local context. The design culminates in a thoughtful relationship between the built environment and nature, showcased by large windows that bring in natural light and frame views of the surrounding landscape.
