The Shinrin-yoku Urban Meditation Cabin is located in Tokyo and designed to connect people with nature through the practice of “forest bathing.” The cabin serves as a peaceful retreat for meditation and relaxation. It features a vertical garden system with hanging pots filled with aromatic, medicinal, and therapeutic plants. The design aims to encourage user interaction with nature, enhancing both individual well-being and community connection.

Vertical Garden Configuration

The cabin showcases a multi-level design that accommodates various species of plants in hanging pots. This vertical garden structure allows users to engage directly with the therapeutic qualities of nature while participating in meditation and aromatherapy. The layout encourages individuals to actively select and interact with plants based on their preferences and seasonal availability, making the experience personal.

User Interaction and Accessibility

The entrance to the cabin is at ground level, making it accessible to all users. A manual system of pulleys and winches facilitates the adjustment of the hanging pots, creating a personalized experience for each visitor. This physical engagement with the plants enhances meditation practices and fosters a stronger connection to the natural surroundings, which is a key element of the cabin's design.

Natural Ventilation and Environmental Connection

The design incorporates strategically placed openings to improve ventilation and invite external sounds into the cabin. This thoughtful arrangement promotes a feeling of connection with the environment, allowing users to immerse themselves in sensory experiences during meditation. Bringing in elements of nature contributes to a calm atmosphere, reinforcing the cabin's goal as a peaceful retreat from urban life.

Sustainability and Practicality

Sustainability is a priority in the cabin's design, with compartments in the attic dedicated to collecting rainwater and storing necessary tools, such as watering cans. This practical feature supports the maintenance of the plants while also promoting efficient use of resources. The sturdy steel framework ensures stability, allowing for interaction with the hanging plants and enhancing the overall experience without sacrificing functionality.

The cabin’s internal compartments not only provide vital storage but also help create an organized environment for users engaged in meditation and plant care. This attention to detail enhances the overall experience and encourages people to connect both with nature and each other.
