The Line of Silence is located near the Hverfjall volcano in Iceland, a site known for its breathtaking natural beauty. The visitor center is designed to provide an inviting space for travelers to explore the geological wonders of the area. The overall design concept emphasizes simplicity and clarity. By using straight lines and minimal forms, the structure connects visitors to the landscape, encouraging reflection and appreciation of nature.

Functionality

The layout is thoughtfully organized to enhance the visitor experience. Key areas include a welcoming entrance lobby, a reception desk, and a coffee shop, all designed to provide comfort and accessibility. There are also support spaces like kitchens and waiting areas that cater to various visitor needs. The center includes distinct zones such as a group concentration area and an exhibition space that invites engagement with the nearby volcanic features. This thoughtful arrangement makes movement through the space intuitive.

Materiality

Materials chosen for the center reflect the local environment and establish a connection to the surrounding landscape. Local stone and grass form the flooring, offering a natural aesthetic while ensuring durability. Dark metal and local wood make up the walls, blending modern design with traditional elements. This mix of materials creates a warm and textured interior, inviting visitors to feel the connection to nature. The ceiling, made from local wood, enhances the sense of warmth and unity in the design.

Visitor Engagement

An interactive wall is a standout feature, promoting hands-on learning about the geology of the Hverfjall volcano. This element encourages visitors to engage with the surrounding landscape in an informative way. The circulation within the center is carefully planned, allowing easy movement between different areas. Visitors can transition smoothly from informative zones to immersive experiences. This thoughtful design allows for a meaningful exploration of the unique geological characteristics of the region.

The architectural form, marked by clean lines and a straightforward presence, highlights the beauty of the surrounding landscape. An open courtyard offers outdoor gathering space, enhancing the connection between the building and nature. It invites visitors to pause and enjoy the tranquil environment of Hverfjall, creating a setting focused on experiencing the natural world.
