Light Wall Residence with Straw Roof for Enhanced Comfort

Project in-detail

Combining a light wall and a straw roof, this residence enhances comfort for its inhabitants by addressing light sensitivity and climate conditions in Tanzania.
5 key facts about this project
01
Light wall disperses sunlight throughout the home, reducing glare and enhancing comfort.
02
Designed specifically for residents with oculocutaneous albinism to mitigate light sensitivity.
03
Straw roof provides natural insulation and integrates with local environmental conditions.
04
Flowing roof shape allows for controlled light entry while buffering intense midday sun.
05
Innovative use of glass and local materials promotes sustainability and climate responsiveness.

The design focuses on creating a home that accommodates the unique needs of its residents. One member of the couple has oculocutaneous albinism (OCA), which increases sensitivity to light. Located in Tanzania, an area known for its bright sunlight and high ultraviolet exposure, the overall concept prioritizes a balance between natural light and comfort. The approach highlights the manipulation of light and shadow to foster an inviting living environment while being sensitive to the specific health requirements of its inhabitants.

Light Wall

A key feature of the design is the "Light Wall," which captures and disperses sunlight throughout the home. Made of glass, this wall allows daylight to filter softly into the living spaces during the day, reducing discomfort from harsh sunlight. When night falls, the illuminated wall serves as a safety boundary, guiding the residents through their home while providing a sense of security in the dark. This element demonstrates how practical needs can be met with functional design.

Roof Design

The roof design features an organic, flowing shape that helps manage light levels entering the house. This design allows gentle morning light to fill the spaces, while also protecting against the intensity of midday sun. The approach reflects a thoughtful response to local climatic conditions, adding to the overall comfort of the home. By simulating natural light patterns, the design creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere throughout the day.

Materiality

Local materials are used, particularly a straw roof, which supports natural ventilation and climate regulation. This choice connects the structure to its environment, allowing it to blend into the landscape while still meeting modern standards. The decision to use these materials enhances sustainability and reduces the structure's environmental footprint. The simplicity of the material choice speaks to a commitment to comfort and functionality.

In every space, the careful balance of light and shadow shapes the experience of the home. Different times of day reveal new qualities within the interiors, allowing residents to enjoy a range of atmospheres throughout their daily lives.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
