Breath in Tokyo: Photorespiration is an innovative response to the challenges of urban living in Tokyo's high-density environment. It focuses on creating spaces that allow residents to find relief from the busy city landscape. The aim is to provide areas for meditation and reflection, emphasizing the importance of light and nature in daily life. The design uses the idea of breath to symbolize the need for personal wellness amidst the pressures of a crowded city.

Conceptual Framework

At the heart of the design is the metaphor of breath. It highlights the need for light and vitality in urban settings. Elevated pathways and distinct cabins make it easy for people to step away from the noise and congestion of everyday life. The spiraling staircase serves as a central element, inviting users to ascend toward a place of personal retreat, representing growth and discovery.

Spatial Organization

The separate cabins are designed to encourage individual experiences. Each cabin captures sunlight, creating a warm and inviting space for relaxation and introspection. This layout promotes a sense of solitude while allowing users to remain connected to the environment around them. The arrangement of these cabins fosters a balance between personal time and the vibrant activity of the city.

Materiality and Structure

The design incorporates a glass screen wall and wooden louvers within a steel frame. These materials work together to enhance both function and appearance. The glass allows natural light to enter and connects the cabins visually to the outside world. Wooden louvers provide shade and privacy while creating a cozy atmosphere. A steel frame ensures the stability of pathways and cabins, making the structure durable and effective in an urban context.

Design Outcomes

The result is a thoughtful integration of personal wellness within a bustling city. The spaces dedicated to meditation and quiet reflection offer opportunities for rejuvenation. The project successfully balances the need for personal space with the realities of urban life. Each design element is intentional, showcasing a focus on the act of breathing within the city environment. It offers a chance for people to reconnect with themselves and find moments of peace in their daily routines.
