Landscape Integration Through Cross-Laminated Timber and Traditional Aesthetics

Project in-detail

Cross-laminated timber forms the backbone of a design that harmoniously integrates with the surrounding landscape, fostering an emotional connection between its occupants and nature while serving as a community space.
5 key facts about this project
01
Cross-laminated timber construction enhances structural stability while reducing environmental impact.
02
The design incorporates charred wooden shingles for improved durability and a unique aesthetic.
03
Landscaped pathways promote interaction, creating a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces.
04
A bent A-frame structure optimizes natural light and views while minimizing energy consumption.
05
Cultural heritage influences are woven throughout, reflecting traditional Chinese landscaping principles.

The architectural design integrates traditional Chinese culture with modern practices, focusing on wood as an essential building material. Set in a landscape that highlights the importance of nature, the design reflects the historical significance of wood in Chinese architecture. This approach connects the principles of traditional landscape painting with architectural form and function, creating spaces that enhance the relationship between people and their environment.

Concept and Aesthetics

The design embodies the idea of "an architecture towards shanshui," which translates elements of traditional Chinese landscape art into a built context. This concept emphasizes the link between the landscape and the structure, making the building feel like a natural extension of its surroundings. The design aims to foster an emotional connection between occupants and the natural environment, promoting harmony between constructed spaces and the earth.

Material Selection

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) plays a crucial role in this design, known for its strength and flexibility. CLT can support loads like steel and concrete and is used in walls, floors, and roofs. This choice of material not only promotes sustainable building practices but also adds warmth and character to the space. The use of wood helps maintain a connection to cultural traditions while meeting the needs of modern architecture.

Spatial Dynamics

Pathways and interaction areas are carefully incorporated throughout the design, guiding visitors as they explore the space. These pathways invite movement, encouraging occupants to engage with their surroundings. The layout considers sightlines, framing views that connect interior spaces to the exterior landscape. This aspect of design enhances the experience, allowing people to appreciate both the architecture and the nature beyond.

This design offers a thoughtful approach to blending artistic heritage with contemporary needs. The careful detailing of wooden features demonstrates a commitment to craftsmanship and the unique qualities of the material. Exposed beams and framing provide not just structure, but also a visual reminder of the past, enriching the overall experience within the space.
