The Meditation Cabin: Lighthouse is located in Itabashi City, Tokyo, providing a compact space for those seeking a short escape from busy lives. With a footprint of less than 6 square meters, it is both flexible and adaptable. The design emphasizes a close relationship with nature and employs hyperboloid shapes that enhance both appearance and structure.

Architectural Concept

The design relies on hyperboloid forms, which add stability and optimize the interior space. The main structure includes prefabricated elements that allow for quick assembly and easy transport. This approach highlights a thoughtful consideration of how users interact with their surroundings.

Levels of Experience

Three distinct levels make up the cabin, each offering different experiences. The first level acts as a space for visitors to release the stress of their day. Privacy is a key feature here, as the area is covered with metal mesh to provide security while keeping the interior hidden from view.

The second level is designed for relaxation. It features comfortable seating where visitors can take short breaks. The minimalist layout encourages a calm atmosphere, allowing people to step away from their routines without distractions.

The rooftop offers a meditative space with panoramic views of the landscape. Users can connect with nature in this area, which is enhanced by ivy growing on the balcony, helping the cabin blend into its environment.

Material Selection

Materials are essential to the design, with bamboo and larch being particularly notable. Bamboo has a high tensile strength, which makes it suitable for areas prone to earthquakes. It is lightweight, making transportation and setup straightforward, and aligns with sustainable practices.

Larch is used in the construction as digitally fabricated components. These glue-laminated members add strength to the hyperboloid structure. This choice reflects a commitment to both form and function while considering environmental impact.

The careful arrangement of spaces, along with the focus on materials and forms, allows the Meditation Cabin: Lighthouse to serve as a place of peace and reflection. It is a unique addition to the urban landscape, offering an opportunity for contemplation amid the hustle and bustle of city life.
