The architectural design incorporates principles of Soft Portuguese Architecture, focusing on a yoga studio within a carefully chosen natural landscape. The studio is situated on a hillside, positioned to take advantage of the slope to provide broad views of the nearby mountains. The design seeks to create a blend of functional spaces with a calming environment, prioritizing simplicity and a strong relationship with nature.

Materials and Spatial Arrangement

The layout is organized into distinct areas that encompass a kitchenette, showers, and storage, which are separated into two wings flat on the ground. This division clarifies the spatial organization while retaining the focus on the main Shala area. The Shala is oriented to face the south-west, ensuring it receives ample natural light. This orientation helps create a peaceful space ideal for yoga practice.

Connection with Nature

A central feature of the design is the integration of a Zen garden. This garden is centrally located within the layout and enhances the connection to the outdoors. A covered exterior hallway runs around the garden, allowing constant visual access and interaction with natural elements. This design choice encourages movement through the space, promoting a calming atmosphere that supports mindfulness and quiet reflection.

Structural Elements and Materiality

In terms of materials, the project selects elements that reinforce its bond with the landscape. The design includes an aluminum frame window system, which provides strength while keeping a refined look. Stone cladding sourced from the local area adds a sense of authenticity to the building. The use of Portuguese Holm Oak for the flooring and trim introduces warmth to the interior environment. Cast-in-place concrete walls offer stability, while the interior insulating wall is crafted to optimize thermal and acoustic comfort, ensuring the space remains serene for users.

A notable design detail is the large windows, which frame striking views of the surrounding landscape. These windows allow for an immersive experience, enabling users to enjoy the tranquility of nature as they engage in their practice.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
