Project in-detail

The hexagonal form, complemented by a living roof and locally sourced timber, creates a serene space for meditation and reflection amid the natural landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
Hexagonal geometry enhances space efficiency and allows flexibility for different meditation practices.
02
A living roof contributes to biodiversity while providing natural insulation for the structure.
03
The use of locally sourced timber reduces the project's carbon footprint and supports regional economies.
04
Natural light is maximized through strategically placed glass panels, fostering a connection with the outdoors.
05
An altar for fragrance processing creates a unique sensory experience integral to meditation.

The Kawakawa Cabin project is an architectural endeavor situated within the Earth Energies Sanctuary, designed to foster moments of peace and introspection. The cabin embodies a balance between structural aesthetics and functional utility, emphasizing a strong connection to the natural environment. The project serves as a dedicated space for meditation and reflection, aligning closely with its intended purpose of promoting inner tranquility and mindfulness.

The cabin's form is defined by its hexagonal geometry, a decision that facilitates spatial versatility and facilitates various meditation practices. One of the central design features is the integration of natural materials, including timber planks and glass panels, which contribute to a warm and inviting atmosphere. The design prioritizes natural light and ventilation through strategically placed openings, allowing users to experience a seamless transition between the interior space and the surrounding landscape.

Sustainable practices are incorporated into the project, reflecting a commitment to ecological responsibility. The green roof not only enhances the visual appeal of the cabin but also provides environmental benefits, such as improved insulation and biodiversity enhancement. The use of locally sourced materials reduces the project’s overall carbon footprint, further aligning with its philosophy of environmental stewardship.

The unique arrangement of the interior space supports multiple uses, including designated areas for individual contemplation and group activities. The altar for fragrance processing serves as an essential feature, enhancing the sensory experience associated with meditation. This thoughtful integration of functionality and design differentiates the Kawakawa Cabin from conventional architectural projects.

Distinct architectural approaches employed in this project include the innovative roof design, which is inspired by the shape of the Kawakawa leaf. The organic form not only serves structural purposes but enhances the overall aesthetic coherence of the design. Moreover, the cabin's easy assembly and disassembly further illustrate a flexible construction approach, making it adaptable to different environments while minimizing ecological disturbance.

This project stands as a compelling example of how architecture can harmonize with its natural surroundings while meeting the specific needs of its users. The thoughtful integration of unique design strategies warrants further exploration. The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
