Graphene-Enhanced Living Space With Panoramic Observation for Scientific Research

Project in-detail

Equipped with graphene-integrated solar panels and a 360-degree panoramic observation window, the structure serves as a secure and adaptable living space for scientists engaged in terrain data collection.
5 key facts about this project
01
Graphene-integrated solar panels enhance energy efficiency by capturing energy from rain.
02
The building incorporates a smart window for 360-degree environmental observation.
03
Elevated structure provides protection from wildlife and natural hazards.
04
Interior spaces easily transition between work and living modes.
05
Rainwater harvesting system supports sustainable resource management.

The design project is situated in a natural environment and is dedicated to the long-term residence of scientists engaged in terrain data collection. The concept highlights an emphasis on interaction with the surrounding landscape through a 360-degree panoramic observation feature. This approach creates an open connection between the interior space and the outside world, which is essential for gathering and analyzing data.

Sustainability
A key focus of the design is sustainability. The roof incorporates solar panels that include a layer of graphene, which allows the panels to capture energy from both ultraviolet and infrared light. This technology enhances energy efficiency and ensures consistent operation throughout the year. Additionally, the graphene enables the collection of energy from raindrops, allowing for greater energy generation during cloudy conditions and reducing dependence on sunlight.

Safety and Security
The building features a sealed design raised above the ground, providing safety from potential dangers posed by wildlife and environmental factors. This elevation not only enhances security but also allows for clear views of the surroundings. It supports the scientific work of the residents while blending into the landscape, creating a connection between the structure and its environment.

Adaptability
The interior layout is designed to accommodate both work and residential needs. In work mode, movable tables and chairs are arranged in a circular fashion near the panoramic window, encouraging collaboration. When the space shifts to residential mode, areas for sleeping and cooking are easily created, providing comfort for long-term stays.

The use of smart glass with adjustable transparency enables residents to manage light and privacy effectively. Sliding doors in the bathroom can open outward or to the side, optimizing space while maintaining a simple look.

At the base of the structure, compartments offer organized storage for personal belongings. This thoughtful organization contributes to a clean and functional living environment.

Overall, the design combines technology and practicality. Each element serves a purpose, creating a space that meets the needs of its users while remaining attuned to the surrounding landscape. The integration of these features highlights a commitment to both functionality and sustainability.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
