Grape-Shaped Structures with Green Terraces Promoting Community Living

Project in-detail

With grape-shaped structures adorned with green terraces, the design fosters community engagement while serving as a guest house and winery integrated into the surrounding landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
Grape-shaped structures enhance aesthetic appeal and functional use.
02
Green terraces promote environmental sustainability and user interaction.
03
Modular design allows for flexible layout and adaptive use of space.
04
Integration of local resources reduces environmental impact and enhances context.
05
Natural light prevails throughout, creating an inviting atmosphere.

Tili guest houses and winery are located in an appealing landscape, integrating rounded forms with the nearby vineyards. The design serves both living and functional needs, creating an experience that connects occupants to their surroundings. The concept focuses on fostering a relationship between the built environment and nature while promoting sustainability and community.

Modularity and Adaptability

The approach emphasizes modularity to allow flexible uses of space. This flexibility supports different functions and changing user needs. The layout is designed to encourage interaction among visitors and residents. It creates specific areas for both social gatherings and personal retreat.

Material Efficiency

The project minimizes the amount of building materials used and prioritizes local resources. This choice reduces transportation costs and environmental impact. It also connects the structure more closely to the local context. A simple material palette helps the architectural form stand out without overt decoration.

Cultural Resonance

The winery aspect promotes communal interactions and strengthens ties within the community. The design encourages gathering, reflecting the culture of the Mediterranean. Natural light flows into the spaces, creating a welcoming atmosphere that enhances social connections.

The design's fluidity avoids sharp angles and dark corners, allowing for smooth movement throughout. This approach encourages engagement with both the inside and outside areas. A notable detail is the way the guest house terraces relate to the landscape, merging built forms with nature in a practical and thoughtful manner.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
