"ISHELLI" is located in the rugged landscape of Iceland, integrating with the environment while serving as a cinema and cultural space. The design captures the contrast between fire and ice, elements that are distinctly Icelandic. The project features two shells; one represents volcanic rock and the other evokes glacier ice. This combination creates a building that stands out while being relevant to its setting.

Distinct Shell Composition

The design incorporates two shells that symbolize Iceland's natural features. The outer shell takes the form of an ice block, showcasing cracks that are both visual elements and entrances. These openings allow light and people to flow in, creating a direct connection to the outside environment.

Interior Spatial Arrangement

Inside, the experience mimics that of an ice cave, centering around a large volcanic stone. This stone serves as the heart of the cinema, providing warmth and focus. The interior is organized over two levels: the upper level serves as an entry and exhibition area, while the lower level is designed for bar and service activities, enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Material Considerations

A notable feature of the design is the outer shell's ability to glow in the dark. This effect is achieved through the use of polycarbonate plates that display detailed ice patterns. The light created from the shell not only draws attention but also interacts with the surrounding landscape, reflecting Iceland’s natural beauty.

Narrative Integration

The cinema shell has a rough texture, resembling volcanic stone, and features engravings of famous film scenes set in Iceland. This connection to local cinema adds depth to the design, enriching the cultural relationship between the building and its surroundings.

The design successfully combines elements of nature and culture, resulting in an architectural form that reflects Iceland's unique landscape while providing a space for community engagement.
