Gabion Walls and Wooden Projections in a Volcanic Landscape

Project in-detail

Constructed with gabion walls and wooden projections, the design offers a carefully integrated pathway that elevates visitors through a volcanic landscape, culminating in a panoramic viewpoint for contemplation and enjoyment of the environment.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed using gabion walls made from locally sourced rocks.
02
Designed to minimize visual impact on the natural landscape.
03
Pathway design obstructs views to enhance visitor anticipation.
04
Features a viewpoint that offers expansive crater vistas.
05
Integrates sustainable wooden elements to harmonize with the environment.

The design is located on the south side of the Nemrut Volcano in Turkey, an area recognized for its impressive natural features, including the crater and Lake Van. The concept aims to blend with the landscape, focusing on reducing visual disruption while providing a meaningful experience for visitors.

Design Concept and User Experience

The project emphasizes a careful integration with the surrounding environment. A pathway begins as an esplanade and gradually ascends into the mountain. This design choice strategically blocks views along the way, creating a sense of anticipation. As visitors reach the summit, they are rewarded with a wide view of the crater, fostering a deeper appreciation for the landscape.

Material Integration

Local materials play a key role in the project’s design. Gabion walls are constructed using rocks sourced from the site itself, allowing for a natural connection to the terrain. Additionally, sustainable wooden structures are incorporated, supporting the intention to harmonize the built environment with the natural surroundings.

Engagement Points

At the peak, a design element identified as a fissure leads to a projection that encourages visitor interaction. This feature invites exploration and reinforces a connection to the landscape. As visitors engage with this point, they experience the environment in a personal and immediate way.

The culmination of the design is a carefully positioned viewpoint that offers extensive vistas. It draws attention to the beauty of the landscape, inviting visitors to pause and reflect on their surroundings in a setting shaped by both nature and thoughtful design.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
