Fractal Geometry and Pyramidal Form Embracing the Volcanic Landscape

Project in-detail

The pyramidal structure, shaped by fractal geometry, harmonizes with the volcanic landscape while facilitating user interaction and contemplation in a sustainable natural setting.
5 key facts about this project
01
Pyramidal form reflects the surrounding mountain profiles.
02
Fractal geometry influences architectural design and layout.
03
Sustainability is prioritized through off-site prefabrication.
04
Strategically placed viewpoints enhance visitor engagement.
05
Integration with the volcanic landscape preserves ecological integrity.

The design focused on the Nemrut Volcano engages with the distinctive features of its environment, integrating the built structure within the landscape. Located in Turkey, the project emphasizes fractal geometry, reflecting nature's patterns in its design. The intent is to enhance user experience while respecting the geological landscape, balancing architecture with ecological sensitivity.

Concept and Design Intent

A strong connection between the architecture and the landscape is fundamental to the design. The use of fractal geometry informs the shape and organization of the building, resulting in a pyramidal form that echoes the mountain profiles in the area. This approach creates various viewpoints, allowing visitors to interact with the natural scenery and deepening their connection to the environment.

Construction Methodology

The construction process prioritizes minimal environmental impact. Prefabrication of the structure occurs in a factory setting, which provides greater control over resources and craftsmanship. Once completed, the components are transported to the site for installation. This method ensures that the natural habitat remains undisturbed and adheres to the contours of the land.

User Experience and Functionality

Visitors are welcomed into an inviting environment that promotes interaction with the landscape. Areas designed for rest and contemplation encourage users to spend time within the volcanic surroundings. This focuses on the relationship between people and nature, offering a space that fosters appreciation for the geological features of the Nemrut Volcano.

The form of the structure aligns closely with the surrounding terrain, allowing it to blend with the site. Thoughtful viewpoints are integrated into the design, creating experiences that encourage exploration and connection with the natural beauty found within the Nemrut Volcano's landscape.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
