The Ice Shack Airbnb is a micro-architectural project located on the Saguenay River in La Baie, Quebec, designed to serve as a seasonal retreat for ice fishing enthusiasts during winter and as a summer lodging option for tourists. This project reflects a contemporary approach to vacation architecture, emphasizing functionality, sustainability, and harmony with nature.

The structure showcases a compact form designed for dual-season use. The overall architectural design prioritizes efficiency, integrating elements that respond to environmental conditions while providing an enjoyable user experience. The Ice Shack combines modern aesthetics with rustic characteristics, utilizing natural materials to blend into the landscape.

The Ice Shack's unique design approach includes a floating foundation that adapts to changes in water levels, providing stability and minimizing environmental impact. This solution underlines the project’s commitment to sustainability. The walls feature wooden cladding that enhances thermal regulation during cold months and ties the structure visually to its forested surroundings. Metal roofing is employed for durability and longevity, effectively managing snow and water drainage.

The spatial configuration is optimized to balance common and private areas while maintaining an efficient flow. The living area serves as the heart of the structure, equipped for varied functional uses such as dining and relaxation. This area is flexible, using adaptable furniture that can accommodate different user requirements throughout the year. The kitchen is designed for efficiency, incorporating compact appliances that facilitate cooking without occupying excessive space.

In addition to recreational functions, the design includes dedicated zones tailored for ice fishing. Access points are strategically positioned to allow easy engagement with the river, enhancing user experience and facilitating outdoor activities.

The Ice Shack stands out through its emphasis on eco-friendly architecture. The integration of solar panels exemplifies an innovative energy solution, aimed at reducing the overall carbon footprint of the project. This feature aligns with modern sustainable practices while providing energy autonomy.

Materials play a critical role in the project’s functionality and aesthetic appeal. The choice of wood, metal, and glass creates a cohesive visual narrative and ensures robustness under varying climatic conditions. The high ceilings and expansive windows invite natural light into the interior, enhancing the feeling of spaciousness.
