The Iceland Volcano Lookout Point enhances visitor interaction with the landscape of the Myvatn Region in Iceland. Designed to have minimal impact on the ground, it focuses on an upward journey that connects people with their natural surroundings. The concept brings together elements of height and exposure, creating experiences that balance the safety of a solid structure with the openness of the outdoors.

Structure and Stability

The lookout point is designed to appear as if it floats above the ground. This visual effect of weightlessness is created using vertical lines from structural tension cables, along with horizontal planes that move with the wind. This combination gives the structure a light appearance while ensuring it remains firmly supported and responsive to the environment.

Kinetic Facade

One of the standout features is the kinetic facade, which enables movement in response to the forces of nature. The arrangement of the panels allows light and shadow to shift across the structure, enhancing its visual appeal. As visitors ascend, they experience different views of the landscape, adding to their overall connection with the site.

Materiality

The construction includes a steel framework made up of beams, jambs, and columns, reinforced by structural steel tension cables. An anchored concrete slab serves as the foundation, hidden from view, which supplies the necessary stability. These materials not only support the design but also ensure the lookout point can withstand the varied weather conditions found in the area.

The careful integration of the lookout with its surroundings successfully balances human experience with the natural landscape. When visitors step onto the metallic platform, they feel a sense of openness, amplified by the play of light filtering through the moving panels. This interaction invites an exploration of the Icelandic scenery beyond, emphasizing the connection between people and nature.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
