The PAINT'house is located in Latvia on a slope that overlooks a quiet lake. It is designed to connect with the surrounding natural environment. The structure consists of two distinct volumes built on the ruins of older buildings, creating a blend of modern design with historical elements. This residence serves as a living space as well as a venue for artistic activities, emphasizing sustainability and respect for nature.

First Volume

The first volume is raised on piles, which helps to prevent interference with the water flow and encourages plants to grow underneath. This height creates a unique interaction between the living space and the natural landscape. Inside, exposed cross-laminated timber gives warmth to the interiors, enriching the atmosphere of the home.

Second Volume

The second volume functions as a workshop and is built from locally sourced stone. This selection strengthens the building's connection to the site, providing a cooler environment suitable for creative work. The placement of this volume allows residents to engage with the lake, inviting them to experience the beauty of the outdoors while they pursue artistic endeavors.

Design Features

The entrance of the PAINT'house is set below ground level, creating a more private and intimate entryway. This thoughtful design also offers a sheltered outdoor space for community use and artistic activities. The arrangement of the two volumes ensures protection from wind within the inner courtyard, creating a comfortable area for gatherings and interactions.

Materiality

The materials used are intentionally left untreated, allowing them to naturally change over time. This choice not only enhances the overall look of the structure but also aligns with a sustainable approach to construction. As the materials age, they continue to connect the building with the surrounding landscape, reinforcing the relationship between the architecture and nature.

The PAINT'house encourages a connection with the outdoors, incorporating features that enhance the experience of living in harmony with nature while fostering creativity and community engagement.
