The Gobi Hut is situated in Guazhou County, Gansu Province, China. Designed for a couple, the dwelling takes advantage of its surroundings, relating closely to the unique landscape of the area, which is close to Dunhuang. The design centers on functional living while promoting sustainability in a compact form.

Architecture Concept

The design focuses on making the most of a small space. It features areas for sleeping and a dedicated indoor greenhouse. This arrangement meets the basic living needs of the couple while integrating nature into their home environment. The greenhouse provides a sense of connection to the outdoors and supports a sustainable lifestyle.

Materiality and Construction

Materials used in the Gobi Hut include ecological wood and prefabricated components. The choice of ecological wood aligns with a commitment to environmental responsibility, as it supports sustainability goals. Using prefabricated components simplifies the building process, making it easier to transport and assemble, which is particularly useful in more remote settings.

Environmental Considerations

Managing light within the Gobi Hut is crucial to its design. Tyvek sunshades are employed on both sides of the house. These can be adjusted to control the amount of sunlight that enters, enhancing comfort and energy efficiency. This flexibility allows occupants to respond to changes in weather and daylight.

A key feature is the indoor greenhouse, which allows the couple to grow plants throughout the year. This aspect not only enhances the indoor environment but also fosters a sense of ownership over their living space. By bringing nature inside, the design promotes a blend of functional living and ecological awareness.
