Earth-Sheltered Pavilion Constructed From Volcanic Rock and Cedar for Cultural Engagement

Project in-detail

Constructed with volcanic rock and covered by a landscaped earth roof, the pavilion seamlessly integrates with its rugged Icelandic surroundings while serving as a versatile space for film and cultural exhibitions.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed using locally sourced volcanic rock for insulation and aesthetic continuity.
02
Earth-sheltered design minimizes visual impact and enhances thermal efficiency.
03
Landscaped roof integrates the pavilion seamlessly with the surrounding terrain.
04
Tiered seating in the main theater optimizes viewing for film presentations.
05
Outdoor amphitheater utilizes natural topography for informal gatherings and performances.
The Børn Náttúrunnar Movie Pavilion is an architectural project that serves as a cultural venue dedicated to film and art. Drawing inspiration from the Icelandic film "Börn Náttúrunnar," this pavilion embodies themes of nature and human interaction with the environment. The design facilitates a multifaceted experience while encouraging visitors to reflect on the relationship between humanity and nature.

The pavilion features a circular form that is both functional and visually cohesive with its surroundings. Its partially embedded design minimizes its visual impact on the landscape, creating a seamless integration with the terrain. The earth-covered roof not only enhances thermal performance but also allows the structure to blend harmoniously with the native ecosystem.

Unique Design Approaches

One of the standout attributes of this project is its commitment to environmental integration. The use of local volcanic rock as a primary building material reinforces thermal insulation and structural integrity. The incorporation of a landscaped roof serves dual purposes of energy efficiency and aesthetic continuity with the landscape. Additionally, the choice of burnished cedar offers a warm tone that complements the natural environment, highlighting a thoughtful approach to materiality.

Important functional spaces within the pavilion include a main theater designed for film screenings, which features tiered seating for optimal viewing. Adjacent to this is an exhibition area that showcases moving images and works related to Icelandic culture. An outdoor amphitheater, located on a natural slope, provides alternative multi-use space that enhances community interaction and utilizes the site's topography.

Architectural Plans and Sections

The architectural design emphasizes a connection to the natural landscape through its strategic layout. Pathways and interconnected rooms facilitate movement and exploration throughout the space. The careful consideration of natural light through selective window placements fosters an engaging environment for visitors and enhances the overall aesthetic of the project.

By combining practical design with respect for its cultural and ecological setting, the Børn Náttúrunnar Movie Pavilion stands out as an exemplary project that prioritizes sustainability and community engagement. For a deeper understanding, interested readers are encouraged to explore the architectural plans, sections, and designs that illustrate the project's nuances and design strategies in detail.
