The Iceland Movie Pavilion is a cultural space that focuses on the film industry of Iceland, set against the backdrop of the country's beautiful landscapes. The design concept emphasizes a connection between the natural environment and the built structure. By envisioning the pavilion as a "hill," the design aims to create an underground experience for visitors while honoring the unique geology of the area.

Site Planning

The site planning emphasizes careful organization, which includes specific areas for parking, distinct entrances for visitors and employees, and access for hikers. This thoughtful arrangement allows for easy movement throughout the space, making it accessible to everyone. The separate entry points encourage a smooth flow of people, whether they are attending a presentation or simply enjoying a visit.

Spatial Organization

Inside the pavilion, the layout features a variety of important spaces. These include an entrance hall, an info shop or bar, exhibition areas, a cinema, and a room dedicated to movie scenes. Also included are a café, wardrobe, toilets, a technical room, and offices. This variety fosters engagement and encourages visitors to explore the connections between cinema and Icelandic nature. Each area serves specific functions, enhancing the overall experience within the pavilion.

Construction and Materiality

The building is constructed using natural materials, which contribute to its connection to the environment. The facades, walls, and floors reflect a commitment to maintaining the aesthetic of the location. The roof, made of concrete, is covered with earth and gravel. This approach uses traditional Icelandic construction techniques, which not only improves durability but also helps the structure fit into the landscape.

Design Features

Architectural sections provide insights into key structural elements, such as steel railings and tensioned stainless steel mesh in the entry area. These elements enhance both safety and visual appeal. The design also allows for stunning views of local landmarks, particularly Hverfjall volcano. By situating the pavilion to create these focal points, the design deepens visitors' connection to Iceland's natural beauty, linking cinematic experiences with the environment.
