The Urban Oase: Harvesting Water Tower project presents an inventive approach to addressing environmental challenges in urban settings. Located in Sokcho-si, Gangwon-do, Korea, it occupies a unique geographical area surrounded by mountains and close to the east coast. This location not only shapes the overall design but also emphasizes the building’s role as a community hub focused on sustainability and adaptability. The concept revolves around transformable architecture, incorporating dynamic structures that can adjust to meet the shifting needs of the urban environment while considering ecological factors.

Material and Structural Consideration

Timber serves as the main building material, stepping away from conventional options. The choice of timber is important, given its lightweight and pre-fabricated nature, allowing for the creation of flexible structures. This decision enhances the building’s ability to adapt to varying conditions, enabling it to engage with the community and incorporate environmental features effectively.

Spatial Organization

The layout is a thoughtful arrangement of spaces dedicated to community engagement and shared activities. This organization emphasizes social interaction and the importance of community in urban life. Each area is designed to accommodate different uses, contributing to the overall vibrancy and integration of the project within its surroundings.

Environmental Integration

The design pays close attention to environmental aspects. By acknowledging Sokcho-si's specific climate, particularly the influence of marine fog, the project incorporates natural elements into its overall structure. This relationship between the built environment and nature highlights a commitment to sustainability. It also enriches the experience for users, encouraging a connection to the local ecology.

Functional Zoning

Distinct zones within the structure include executive offices, a sky lobby, and dining areas, all of which promote user engagement. This careful zoning addresses the diverse needs of the community and emphasizes accessibility. By organizing spaces in a way that encourages people to come together, the project enhances the life of the neighborhood.

The façade features a combination of organic shapes and geometric designs, creating a visual connection to both the nature that surrounds it and the urban area nearby. This detail helps position the structure as a clear focal point in the landscape, reflecting the broader themes of community and sustainability at the heart of the design.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
