Virsaune Food Court is located in the Sēlija region and serves as an important gathering place for the Sansusi Festival, an alternative chamber music event in a forest setting. The design emphasizes a connection to nature, focusing on movement and proximity among users. The goal is to enhance the experience for festival attendees by creating spaces that encourage social interactions while harmonizing with the natural environment.

Architecture Concept

The design promotes fluidity and interaction, allowing for easy movement between different areas of the food court. By placing the structure within the forest, it engages with the landscape in a meaningful way. The open, lightweight design accommodates various weather conditions and seasonal needs, helping to merge the built environment with the surrounding nature.

Functional Zoning

Virsaune Food Court features clearly defined zones such as eating areas, caterer workspaces, a trailer, and storage. This arrangement supports smooth circulation, making it easy for visitors to navigate. The layout encourages social gatherings, which is essential for the festival atmosphere. Each zone is designed to serve its purpose while maintaining a sense of connection with the overall environment.

Material Selection

The materials chosen for the food court play a significant role in supporting the design's intent. Grey gravel is used for the flooring, providing a natural ground surface. Brightly colored blue metal is employed for the round tables, adding a cheerful touch. Stainless steel surfaces in the kitchen ensure durability and are easy to clean. The upper level features bright fabric elements that interact with sunlight and wind. The caterer workspaces are built on a timber board terrace, framed by timber square posts, and the ground wall consists of timber plywood panels, reinforcing the connection to the forest setting.

As evening approaches, integrated LED lighting comes into play, illuminating the space and enhancing social interactions. The light creates an inviting atmosphere, encouraging conversations and connections among festival-goers. This thoughtful design choice defines the food court’s character within its natural context, making it a welcoming spot for all who attend.
