The KREMM KAFE project offers a modern design intended for urban settings, primarily functioning as a mobile coffee and gelato kiosk. The concept revolves around sustainability, modularity, and efficiency, catering to the needs of contemporary consumers. The project employs a modular system made up of prefabricated elements, enabling swift assembly at the location, while minimizing both construction time and environmental impact.

Sustainability and Renewable Energy

A significant focus of the KREMM KAFE design is sustainability through the use of renewable energy sources. The A Module emphasizes off-grid functionality, featuring potable and grey water storage, along with high-capacity batteries that supply energy. Radiant floor heating is included for comfort. Additionally, wind turbines and thin-film photovoltaic panels allow the kiosk to operate without reliance on traditional energy systems.

Functional Design Elements

The B Module acts as the primary serving area, designed for both efficiency and customer interaction. It includes an entry point with a counter window, as well as a nighttime window cover for added security when closed. Inside, energy-efficient LED lighting and radiant floor heating create a welcoming atmosphere, making the space comfortable for customers.

Outdoor Engagement

The C Module is constructed as a pergola bar, enhancing the outdoor experience for visitors. The retractable pergola allows for flexible seating that adapts to different weather conditions. This design element not only boosts the visual appeal of the kiosk but also encourages guests to enjoy the surrounding environment while sipping their beverages.

Scalable Components

The D Module serves as an extension, enabling flexible operations with the addition of replicable sections as needed. This modular design allows for accommodating size while maintaining the overall compact nature of the kiosk. Each module is framed from wood and insulated with semi-rigid stone wool, contributing to thermal efficiency within the space.

The architecture of KREMM KAFE features a durable and rust-resistant corrugated aluminum shell that balances function and aesthetics. The interior is finished with waterproof plywood, ensuring the space can handle high usage while remaining easy to maintain. Together, these elements create an efficient environment tailored to serve the demands of an active urban lifestyle.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
