The design is located in Arizona's Ironwood Forest National Monument and aims to confront the realities of immigration and the lives impacted by the journey across the United States' southern border. Functioning as both a memorial and a contemplative area, it allows for reflection on those who have lost their lives during perilous attempts to enter the country. The overall concept invites engagement through simplicity and emotional clarity, set against the backdrop of a demanding desert landscape that mirrors the struggles of migrants.

Design Concept

The intent of the design is to weave a narrative that connects visitors to the heavy reality of migration. Positioned in an environment where temperatures can soar to 106°F (41°C), the memorial highlights the significant challenges many face on their journey. This location deepens the visitors' understanding, ensuring that their experience is tied closely to the struggles depicted.

Spatial Organization

Characterized by a modest scale, the design fosters a sense of humility that aligns with the memorial's purpose. The careful arrangement of pathways and landscaping encourages visitors to move through the site thoughtfully. This layout is designed to promote personal reflection, inviting individuals to engage with the poignant stories represented in the landscape.

Integration with Environment

While specific construction materials are not detailed, the design is intended to work in harmony with the desert surroundings. The aim is to create a strong connection to the natural environment, enriching the contemplative experience. Elements such as natural contours and local vegetation are incorporated to enhance the atmosphere, guiding visitors as they journey through the site.

The memorial evokes a sense of calm while serving as a reminder of the human cost associated with immigration. It fosters a dialogue between memory and the quest for opportunity, characterized by its straightforward design and clear sense of place.
