Cylindrical design reduces wall thickness while maximizing strength.
02
Prefabricated elements streamline construction and minimize waste.
03
Two-level layout accommodates flexible living arrangements.
04
Focused on adaptability to changing resident needs over time.
05
Circular cross-section enhances natural light throughout the interior.

The Cylinder House stands out with a design focused on durability, resilience, and flexibility in residential living. Set in a location that promotes a connection with nature, the structure features a cylindrical shape that enhances stability and strength. This design accommodates the changing needs of its residents, providing spaces that adapt to their lives over time.

Geometric Efficiency

The cylindrical form reduces wall thickness while maintaining structural strength. By eliminating unnecessary corners, the design creates a clean and functional aesthetic. The circular cross-section is carefully calibrated to allow for enough height, making it possible to divide the building into two levels for varied interior layouts.

Sustainable Construction

Prefabricated cylindrical elements contribute significantly to the project’s sustainability efforts. This method lowers the overall consumption of materials, energy, and labor. The focus on efficient assembly supports environmentally friendly practices and demonstrates a modern approach to building. This strategy not only saves resources but also streamlines the construction process.

Functional Integration

Simplicity and functionality are at the core of the design, which integrates well with its surroundings. By creating a strong connection between the living spaces and the environment, the design invites interaction. The layout considers future adaptations, ensuring it can meet the evolving demands of family life and personal preferences.

The building's cylindrical shape culminates in a unique profile that draws the eye upward, allowing natural light to pour into the interiors and creating an inviting atmosphere throughout the space.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
