Cut Corner Cabins Featuring CLT Beams with Traditional Latvian Chimneys

Project in-detail

The inclusion of cut corners and traditional chimneys enhances the cabins’ design, while the use of CLT beams ensures sustainability, creating an inviting space for communal living in the Latvian landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
The design emphasizes cut corners around the chimney to enhance sunlight exposure.
02
Each cabin is anchored by a central fireplace, promoting communal gathering.
03
CLT beams are used for their structural efficiency and sustainability.
04
Extended eaves provide weather protection while maximizing natural light.
05
The integration of a boat dock supports outdoor recreational activities.

The design explores the deep meaning of fire in a traditional Latvian context. Located within a natural landscape, the project consists of several cabins that foster community while respecting the beauty of their surroundings. Central to the design is the fireplace, which acts as a source of warmth and a place for people to gather, merging modern needs with cultural significance.

Fireplace as Central Element

At the heart of each cabin is the fireplace, placed thoughtfully to create a welcoming environment. This design choice encourages social interactions, allowing occupants to come together around a common focal point. The extended eaves provide shelter from the elements and let in natural light, enhancing the connection between the interior and the outdoors.

Functional Layout

The layout includes various essential spaces, such as a parking area, sauna, shed, and boat dock. Each of these areas is integrated into the overall design, ensuring easy movement throughout the site. Pathways are clearly defined, promoting circulation while balancing communal spaces with personal privacy. This careful planning highlights the importance of socializing in a tranquil setting.

Materiality and Construction

The cabins are built using several key materials, including:

- Pile Foundations
- CLT Beam with a special shape
- CLT Wall Panel
- Roofing Wall Plate
- CLT Beams for the chimney frame
- Clay Brick Filling for the chimney
- CLT Roof Panel
- Mineral Wool for insulation
- Wooden Cladding, lighter on the interior
- Darker Wooden Cladding on the exterior

These materials contribute to the buildings' durability and reflect a commitment to sustainable construction. The combination of CLT and varied cladding enhances the character of the cabins, tying them closely to the local architectural style.

Design Detail

Cut corners around the chimney allow for more sunlight to enter the interiors. This feature not only highlights the importance of the fireplace but also creates an inviting atmosphere. The interplay of light throughout the day fosters a warm setting, reinforcing the cabins’ purpose as inviting retreats that connect people with nature.
