The Lookout Loop is located in Pape Nature Park, designed to encourage visitors to explore and engage with the natural environment. It takes the form of a circular path elevated above the ground, incorporating curved stair sections that create a continuous loop. This thoughtful design allows for easy movement while offering various viewpoints from which to enjoy the surrounding landscape.

Design Concept

The structure features three pairs of curved stair sections that together make up a circular enclosure. As users ascend the stairs, they widen, culminating in observation decks that maximize views. The gradual expansion of the stairs creates an inviting atmosphere, encouraging visitors to interact with the park while also providing moments for rest and contemplation.

Structural Integration

At the center, an open void creates a spacious feeling. This openness connects the structure more closely to the surrounding nature. Below the stair sections, there are sheltered areas where visitors can take a break, allowing for easy integration of functional spaces within the design. This mix of movement and resting spots enhances the experience along the park's trails.

Materiality and Construction

Heartwood of Siberian larch is the primary material used, chosen for its durability and resistance to rot. This selection not only ensures the structure's longevity but also connects visually with the forested area. The facade acts both as a railing and a decorative feature, with gaps between the wooden boards that let natural light in, promoting an airy and open feeling.

Foundation and Stability

The foundation consists of wooden poles driven into the ground, similar to those used for the nearby footbridge. This method provides stability for the elevated design while allowing it to blend into the natural terrain. The attention to material choice and structural integrity enhances the functionality and visual appeal of the space.

The design captures the play of light and shadow across the surfaces, enriching the experience for those who visit. Visitors find a comfortable place to interact with the landscape, connecting with nature in a thoughtful and engaging environment.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
