Curved Community Pavilion Constructed From Cross-Laminated Timber With an Emphasis on Acoustic Functionality

Project in-detail

A monolithic pavilion constructed from cross-laminated timber, ENTITY highlights its acoustic features and inward-focused design to create a reflective space for community gatherings and cinematic experiences.
5 key facts about this project
01
A northern-facing cinema theatre minimizes heat gain while maximizing natural light.
02
The design incorporates an inner garden that serves as a transitional space.
03
Acoustic screens provide versatility for various event formats.
04
Cross-laminated timber construction reduces environmental impact and allows rapid assembly.
05
Architectural collars enhance shading and create a dynamic visual effect on the exterior.

ENTITY is set against the dramatic backdrop of Iceland, a place known for its stark beauty and powerful nature. The design includes a small cinema theatre, gathering areas, and service spaces, all brought together in a single architectural volume. The concept explores the relationship between humans and the environment, aiming to create spaces that encourage reflection and interaction with nature. The structure stands out while maintaining a respectful presence in its surroundings.

Design Concept

The central idea of ENTITY is to highlight how transient human experiences can be within the natural world. The design leads visitors to think about their connection with the environment. The building features a simple, monolithic form that invites curiosity. Visitors see different perspectives as they move around, enhancing their experience of both the architecture and the landscape.

Spatial Arrangement

The layout of ENTITY is carefully crafted to support various uses. The cinema theatre is placed at one end, allowing for direct engagement with those who enter. Large acoustic screens enable the space to adapt for films, concerts, or seminars. Nearby, the gathering area serves multiple functions, combining a bar, gallery, and reception space to encourage socializing and cultural activities. This arrangement fosters interaction among visitors.

Environmental Considerations

ENTITY thoughtfully incorporates elements that support sustainability and comfort. The cinema theatre faces north to avoid overheating, while maximizing natural light. In the gathering area, architectural collars help manage sunlight, ensuring a pleasant atmosphere throughout the year. These features respond directly to the challenges of the Icelandic climate, improving the experience for everyone who visits.

Material Selection

Cross-laminated timber is used for much of the structure. This choice makes the building lightweight, which reduces the demands on its foundation. The design allows for quick assembly on site. Additionally, collector panels on the roof provide hot water, and solar panels generate electricity. These choices reflect a commitment to sustainability while enhancing the building's function.

Inside ENTITY, curving forms and reflective surfaces create a warm and inviting atmosphere, drawing visitors into a space that emphasizes the beauty of nature outside. The design encourages exploration and contemplation within a setting that honors the landscape it inhabits.
