Local craftsmanship traditions are preserved and showcased throughout the space.

The Lumina Courtyard project is situated in an old courtyard on Business Street in Qi County, Shanxi Province, China. It reimagines a traditional structure as both a studio and a home for a local brick carver. The design concept emphasizes a blend of craftsmanship and modern living, creating a space where visitors can engage with the art of brick carving and appreciate the local culture.

Spatial Arrangement

The architectural layout features a well-organized courtyard that serves as the heart of the design. Wells are arranged to establish a clear central axis, enhancing the navigability of the space. This design choice aims to improve natural light access within the building. Although the main house is positioned to the north, nearby structures pose challenges for light penetration, which has been addressed thoughtfully in the design.

Functional Zoning

In Lumina Courtyard, spaces are clearly defined for various functions. The studio is dedicated to brick carving, allowing the artisan to create products on-site. This arrangement offers visitors a chance to witness the craft in action and fosters engagement with local artistry. By combining work and sales, the design facilitates a direct connection between the artisan and the community.

Interior Spaces

The first floor accommodates a mix of public and private areas tailored to blend the needs of living and interaction. Included are spaces such as a burning kiln display, a tourist experience area, and zones for engraving, drafting, and polishing. The residential sections consist of a kitchen, dining room, bedrooms, and adaptable social areas, enabling family life while welcoming visitors and community participation.

Artisanal Detail

The project respects the rich cultural heritage of Shanxi while addressing contemporary living requirements. It preserves the essence of traditional architecture and weaves in the everyday life of artisans. The thoughtful design culminates in a vibrant environment where craftsmanship and communal engagement coexist naturally, reflecting both history and modernity.
