Corten Steel Facade Embracing Volcanic Landscape with Interactive Exhibition Space

Project in-detail

A corten steel facade harmonizes with the volcanic landscape of Myvatn while offering an interactive exhibition space that engages visitors with the geological context.
5 key facts about this project
01
Corten steel cladding develops a weathered patina that blends with the surrounding volcanic terrain.
02
The building shape echoes the form of nearby Hverfjall crater, enhancing site integration.
03
Large windows frame dynamic views of the landscape, promoting a strong indoor-outdoor connection.
04
Interactive exhibition spaces allow for flexible configurations and diverse programming.
05
Locally sourced basalt is used to create pathways, reinforcing the site's geological identity.
Litli Brodir is a contemporary architectural project located in the volcanic region of Myvatn, Iceland. The design reflects the unique geological features of the area, particularly the Hverfjall crater, by utilizing materials and forms that harmonize with the surrounding landscape. It serves multifunctional purposes, including office space, an exhibition area, and a café, creating a gathering point for visitors to explore and engage with the natural beauty surrounding them.

The architecture is characterized by a distinctive form that mimics the curvature of volcanic hills, while the exterior skin of corten steel exhibits a weathered appearance that blends seamlessly into the environment. Advanced thermal insulation techniques ensure energy efficiency, while the incorporation of large windows facilitates natural light and views, further connecting the interior and exterior spaces.

Natural Materials and Local Context

A key aspect of Litli Brodir's design is its use of locally sourced materials, which reinforce its connection to the physical context. The corten steel façade not only provides structural stability but also evolves over time through weathering, acquiring a patina that establishes a dialogue with the geological features of Myvatn. The inclusion of polished white lava stone for pathways and internal features creates a visual and tactile contrast that complements the rough texture of the steel.

The arrangement of spaces within the project prioritizes visitor experience and functionality. Office areas are situated for privacy and productivity, while the exhibition space occupies a central position, designed to facilitate a variety of display formats. The kitchen and café area encourage social interaction and act as a communal hub for visitors. This careful zoning allows seamless flow throughout the project, enhancing usability without sacrificing architectural integrity.

Integration with Natural Landscape

What distinguishes Litli Brodir is its integration with the natural landscape. The building's design incorporates principles of passive solar heating and natural ventilation, optimizing energy efficiency. The architectural form and orientation respond to the local climate, ensuring that the interior spaces are comfortable year-round. Additionally, the perforations in the corten steel allow for play of light and shadow, creating dynamic interior environments that change throughout the day.

The attention to context and sustainable practices positions Litli Brodir as a relevant model for future architectural undertakings in similar environments. The project emphasizes a deep respect for the landscape, encouraging the viewer to engage with both the built form and the surrounding nature.
